Midlife Crisis

At least I didn't buy a sports car

Day 5 – Laundry Day

Jesus Christ, people, did you think I was going to spending all my time having adventures?

I had to wash my clothes, because I wouldn’t get a chance during the dig itself, and my clothes were going to comeback covered in mud, dust and a reasonable chance of ectoplasm before it was over. So it was off to the local coin laundry I went.

I don’t recall the last time I went to a coin laundry (it was probably 20 odd years ago),so I have no idea if these prices are awful or not.

  • 60p (AU$1.20) for a cup of detergent
  • 3.80 (AU$7.60) for the wash
  • 1.00 (AU$2.00) for 8 minutes of drying time

What I do know is that I have no idea how to do a pound symbol on this keyboard. There’s probably some freaky keyboard combination that requires you to have two opposable thumbs.

I had a book with me, which I had been reading on the plane journey after buying it on a whim at the airport. This is the autobiography of John Cleese, So Anyway…, and it is not only an entertaining read, but informative. He talks a lot about aspects of comedy, which I recognise from my time doing Improvised Theatre, but these not are explained as such and are his personal observations. The parallels between himself and Keith Johnstone’s teaching are remarkable and independently reached. If any of my Impro friends read this (and seriously. why are you NOT reading this?), get the book.

After running out of coins, I collected my most dry clothes and I went back to my lodgings. Read for a bit and watched TV, then prepared myself for the coming day.

Trowels. Check.

Wet weather gear. Check.

Steel capped boots. Check. Highly valuable in hindsight, considering how often I smashed my foot with a mattock or spade.

Gloves. Check. I would forget to take these in the morning.

Sharpies. Check. Similarly forgotten in the morning.

Cameras. Check.

Sunscreen. Check.

Hat. Check.

Sunglasses. Check.

Tomorrow, I would be digging.
